For SLPs - Literacy Approach Deck Template
During my first year as a school-based SLP I felt isolated as a one person team at my elementary school, and I was uncertain how to tie my activities to the classroom curriculum. I enrolled in continuing education courses and felt empowered when I learned about literacy-based techniques for language intervention in the school setting; a method that married our goals as SLPs and scaffolding academic success. The goal of this approach is to target language not in isolation, but using reading and writing activities to address communication concerns.
I began utilizing non-fiction books/articles aligned with classroom subjects. Maintaining content supports carryover of strategies from speech to the classroom. As I grew more confident with this method, I realized I could build in a month’s worth of sessions for a majority of my students using one slide deck, one book, and one planning session.
Using my unit template can support you in creating your own literacy deck for students. Not only will it make you more confident and streamlined in your therapy, but it will off load a lot of the mental weight of ‘what I am going to do today’ as sessions come along.
